You know it's not officially summer until the peach milkshake makes an appearance at Whitey's Jolly Kone. The West Sacramento drive-in is apparently quite an institution (opened in the 1960s), but I'd actually never tried it until I was working in Sacramento.
Now, let's get the basics out of the way. Whitey's Jolly Kone is only open on the weekdays, 10am-7:30pm. They have no website. The lines can be long in the summer. And there's only a handful of tables to sit at.
They have the standard drive-in fare. Hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken strips, a couple of sandwiches, fries, and onion rings. As well as tacos, burritos, and even a deep-fried burrito. And the prices are CHEAP. It's $4.60 for a 1/3 pound cheeseburger and $2.35 for a large fries.
And while the food is fine, what I make a trek to Whitey's Jolly Kone for is the seasonal fresh fruit milkshakes. HOLY MOLY.
And like the other fare, they are cheap at $3.65 for a large fresh fruit shake. Strawberry and blackberry are standard fare, and very good. But what makes my heart sing and I wait all year long for is the fresh peach shakes.
Now I love a good thick vanilla shake. But honestly I've gotten too many watery mediocre shakes to try them at new places often.
But Whitey's Jolly Kone knows how to make a real milkshake. Thick, filled with fresh fruit and not too sweet. You can really taste the fresh peaches. And you can eat it with a spoon. The perfect combination of ingredients and the perfect consistency. The only downside is that it's not available all year round!
They also have a delicious pumpkin shake in the fall. I'm not much of a pumpkin drink person (I know I just lost my basic b*tch card for not liking PSLs). But it's one pumpkin drink I'll devour. I mean, anything that is enrobed in thick vanilla ice cream is a win for me.
